Robert Fulton Jr. High School 1969

The collage above is from the June 1969 A-9 Graduating Class yearbook.

The Behind the Scene Crews

Last but not least our faculty. I should have taken a picture of Mr. TeMaat, the Boy's VP since he was so...memorable. I remember years ago watching a BBC documentary on Marilyn Monroe in which Pete Dye's name was mentioned. As I recall he was married to someone with money. If anyone remembers that documentary or if the information is right I would love to know. I also remember one of our teachers had a Dune Buggie but I forget who it was. That was pretty cool at the time.

Before I posted this I check out classmates.com to see if any of my fellow "Elysians" were on there. A few were but I only found one picture of someone I knew. The photo's above are taken with my camera and not my scanner so the quality is poor, but good enough to spark a few good memories. Going through the book I spotted many girls who I had crushes on at the time. One in particular but she can remain a mystery.

P.S. I just received an e-mail from my friend Bob Walance and he sent some scans of the 1986 Fulton yearbook. In it was a picture of someone special who I forgot. Tammy Francis was one of my teachers at Fulton. Her husband was also a member of my Dad's Masonic Lodge. She was friends with my Mom and I used to run into Tammy when I went to Lodge events with my Mom. Truth be told when she was my teacher I had a crush on her. I'm sure I was not alone.

I graduated from Robert Fulton Jr. High in June 1970. I was in Mr. Dye's class. I think I was also in Mr. Fee's class. I remember Ms. Davila playing raquetball. Do you remember the vice principal who spoke through a bullhorn, "Get off the wall!" My homeroom teacher whose name I can't remember drove a corvette to school.

Mr.La Mat, not sure of the spelling without dragging out the yearbook. I think he was the one with the bullhorn. I liked Fulton, it was the only school I really liked. I graduated the year before you. I recall a teacher with a dun buggy but can't think who had a Corvette. Thanks for checking out our blog.

I don't recall that name but maybe someone else will. Maybe if I dig out my old yearbook it will ring a bell. Thanks for checking out our blog.

i REMEMBER GETTING SWATTED BY TEMATT

Carey A, Wilson said...

I remember thinking Tematt was odd. I never had an encounters with him. What did you do to get a swat? It's okay, the statue of limitations has passed. The only battle I had with teachers was them telling me to tuck my shirt in. I hated tucking it in and finally got square bottoms designed to be worn out. They eventually gave up.

The cinnamon rolls were the best. I still think of them.

I graduated Fulton in 1984. Hated it, but that's another story. I appreciate seeing the old yearbook pics. Several of the teachers were still there in the early-80s: Anderson, Armen, Dye, Later, Pizzuti, Swartz (who had a big, droopy mustache in my time). I had Mr. Dye for PE one semester; very cool guy, a popular teacher. Mrs. Francis was the 7th-grade counselor, & yes, a very attractive lady. Mrs. Later once mocked me for my knowledge of all the tiny European countries in History/Geography class. In front of everyone! I never forgave her for that. Ah, those weren't the days...

WE WOULD ALSO CLIMB ON TOP OF THE GYM . WE WOULD LOOK DOWN THROUGH THE OPEN WINDOWS ABOVE .THEY WERE CONTROLLED ELECTRICALLY AND ONCE WE WERE ALMOST DE-CAPITATED BY SOMEBODY CLOSING THEM . I ALSO HAVE FOND MEMORIES OF MR. DYE , HE WAS A GOOD DUDE ...

Hello fellow Robert Jr. High Grads. I graduated in 1976. Those were my best years because I enjoyed playing in Jazz band with a great instructor Mr. Payne. I played the sax with George Shelby who now is a professional sax player. You can see him on Youtube. I should had kept on playing the sax myself but I am back playing again. Mr. Payne I believe went on to instruct at CSUN. Too bad I didnt know his first name so I could Google his name to see what became of him. Those were the days and I still remember the cute girls that played in band.

I remember Mr. TeMaat very well. He had that bullhorn and would tell people to get off the wall. They would get three days of paper pickup. My 3 years there (1965-1967) were my fondest years. And the cinnamon roles were indeed the best!

I graduated in 1977. Peter dye was my home room teacher all three years and my all time favorite teacher. I also had him for p.e. The last year I was there and classes became co-ed. I always wanted to go back and see him and never did. I lost track of my friends, Marie Martini, Debbie Swartley (not sure if I spelled that right), and Christine Eschenbrucher. I would love to know where you all are.

I have to say, when I found this post, I needed to write. I graduated from RF and went to Van Nuys High, oddly, I recall some things not mentioned. My Grandfather taught woodshop Mr. Gilbert..."That's one Red Mark for You Bud"! I can also recall Mr. Fee in Gym...Mr. Maslack taught History, and Homeroom was with Mr. Massey. also Math with Mrs. Weedoo Not sure of the spelling. She retired the year I graduated.

I promoted from Fulton Jr High in 1976. Jr High was absolutely the best time in my life as far as school goes. That is because Mrs. Anderson changed my life with the introduction and encouragement of singing harmonies, etc. I started in Jr Girl Glees in the first semester of 7th grade, and made it into Choir by the 2nd semester of 7th grade. It was a magical time for me. Mrs. Sheehy was also wonderful to me, and really helped me with Math! She brought my grade up from a D to a B. Finally, I remember Mrs. Withers and the awesome Pumpkin Bread and Caramel Corn we made in Cooking Class. Wish I still had the recipes. I still remember the smell of melting butter in her class. Love you Fulton Jr High!

I was at RF from 1958-1960, Valerio before that. I saw someone say that Mr. Gilbert was his grandfather. I remember Mr. Gilbert primarily because he always had his radio tuned to KGIL, which featured a lot of Johnny Mathis. Miss Lamb was the orchestra teacher and Mr. Hum was the chorus teacher (believe it or not). Mr. Hum had attended RF himself. Mr. George was the gardening teacher. If you said "dirt" he'd give you a swat. The Spanish teacher, Miss Leabow, was great!

Charlemagne Payne was my music teacher at Fulton from summerschool 1972 until graduation in 1975. He had an incredible command over his class. He could put fear in you but at the same time inspire you. His lessons were disciplined but loaded with humor. Our beginning winds, band, and orchestra won interscholastic awards year after year. No one came close. It was a testament to Mr. Payne's innate ability to drive students to do their very best. One time I told him I wanted quit (flute). He wouldn't let me. "We'll let you know when it's time to quit." 40 years later, I still play.

I went to Fulton Jr. High from 1979 to 1982. I had Pete Dye for PE, as well as Mr. Barnes and Mrs. Melnick. Melnick was also my homeroom teacher. Mr. Randall was my English teacher and Mr. Konish was the Vice Principal. Everybody hated him. I played drums in the school band all three years, but can't remember the teacher's name. And yeah, I remember those cinnamon rolls too.

I currently work at RFCP & am curious:
over the years, students have talked about the death of a student in the auditorium(?).
Can anyone verify this?

This was my graduating class, 1969. Mr Allen taught an experimental class they called History 4, which explored the way the media manipulates people, mainly focused on advertising. I got more out of that class than any other. Mr Allen was taking a risk with this; the authorities were skeptical of the idea. Good man, Mr Allen.

Mr Dow, on the other hand, was a prick.

Mr. Massey, what a great guy!

That is a lovely tribute to a great teacher, Mr. Payne! He recruited me to play piano accompaniment for solo instrumentalists who tried out at LACC for music scholarships. No school credit, no pay, but great fun to hang around his classroom for a great 3 years.

I remember the school dances in the gym..terrible acoustics! None of the boys would dance (except Greg Butcher), so I remember encouraging the girls to dance with each other, as I had seen in movies from the 1940s when young men were scarce during WW11.
